APA-Kigali (Rwanda) The Rwandan Interahamwe militia groups accused of complexity in the 1994 genocide that claimed over one million souls are reported to be re-grouping and equipping themselves inside the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) and ready to continue their atrocities, APA has reliably learnt from UN peacekeeping mission.
According to a press statement issued by the UN peacekeeping force spokesperson, Captain Karl Fuller, availed to APA on Tuesday evening, the Rwandan militias are also ready to assassinate the top DR Congo government officials and military officers who supported the joint military offensive with Rwanda against them.
The joint attack at the start of this year by over 800 strong Congolese and Rwandan armies had failed to neutralize the rebels but probably the five-week joint operation only succeeded in scattering the bloody dreaded militias who still want to quench their thirst with more killings.
After years of mutual animosity between DR Congo and Rwanda, the two armies worked together in an operation against the Hutu group. The militia’s presence in eastern DR Congo has been viewed as a major factor in the region’s instability since the Rwandan genocide of 1994.
According to the UN, there are reports claiming that the rebels have taken over the mines around the village of Pinga. “The village is said to be particularly vulnerable as it is surrounded by mountains, allowing the rebels to easily retreat and attack at will,” he said, adding however that the UN peacekeeping force had fought off several attacks by hundreds of Interahamwe militiamen.
“We managed to repel them but their intention was to come and loot and then obviously to kill.”
Five months ago, 3000 troops were approved by the UN to be deployed to Congo to assist in halting the FDLR, but there is still no sign of the troops in the conflict-ridden country as the UN mission still complains of being overstretched and unable to respond effectively to outbreaks of violence. |
